Kiwi surf lifesaver Samantha Lee breaks world record at German Cup
Former Commonwealth Games swimmer Samantha Lee broke her own world record as the New Zealand Black Fins surf life saving team dominated the second day of the 2015 German Cup event.
The 23-year-old Wellingtonian lowered the mark in the 100m rescue medley to 1.08.86 sec, taking New Zealand's overall tally to three world records at the German Cup and five in total.
Mirroring the 2013 German Cup, Lee and Wellington's world champion Steve Kent once again took out top female and male competitors categories at Warendorf, Germany, this weekend with North Shore's Laura Quilter, who also swam for New Zealand at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, taking second spot behind Lee.
Events contested on Sunday (NZ Time) included the 100m manikin carry with fins, 100m rescue medley, 4x50m medley relay and the 200m Super Lifesaver.
Quilter set a new New Zealand record in the 100m carry, claiming silver with a time of 53.98 with Lee close behind to take the bronze in a time of 56.10.
Quilter was also second behind Lee in the rescue medley in 1.12.05.
In the men's 100m Manikin Carry, Chris Dawson came fourth equal (47.19) with Kent seventh (47.78).
Kent claimed silver in the 100m rescue medley in 1.01.21.
The Kiwi combo of Kent, Dawson, Andy McMillan and Andrew Trembath finished the men's 4x50m medley in 1.33.87 to take sixth.
Lee capped her winning performance with silver in the women's Super Lifesaver category.
Then it was Kent's turn to end the competition on a high note, setting a new New Zealand record in the men's Super Lifesaver in 2.09.50 to claim the bronze medal.
New Zealand team manager Mark Weatherall said he and coach Steve Ferguson were happy with the team's performances over the last 12 days.
"It's been a very worthwhile trip, with attendance at both the Orange Cup in the Netherlands last weekend and this weekend's German Cup. Each athlete has worked hard to develop and execute their race plans and, as the results show, they have done a great job," Weatherall said.
"The last 12 days has been very busy, but rewarding as we continue to track towards Rescue 2016."
