Sophie Irving, 2017 WHiPA Lloyd Morrison Pathway to Podium Scholarship Recipient

Congratulations to Sophie Irving, 2017 WHiPA Lloyd Morrison Pathway to Podium Scholarship Recipient.
Sophie is 14 years old and currently attends Wellington East Girls College. She has been swimming competitively since 2011, swimming for Capital Swim Club in Wellington under Head Coach Gary Hollywood.
Sophie’s passion and drive for swimming comes from a love of the water apparent from a young age. Her preferred stroke is backstroke but she’s looking to improve the others. She has competed at quite a few national events and was selected to represent New Zealand at Australian State Teams Age Short Course Champs in 2016 and again in September this year. She was part of the 2016 NZ Talent ID squad and is currently part of the 2017 NZ National Development team.
Sophie also performs in the ocean, claiming 4 national titles at the most recent Oceans ’17 competition in Mt Maunganui. She holds the New Zealand record for 100m with obstacles at the NZSLS National Pool Champs competition. Swimming and surf lifesaving are a huge part of Sophie’s life, she also played rugby through to U13’s where she has been a tenacious and spirited competitor. She enjoys competing and training immensely and is looking forward to future challenges.
The goal of the Pathway to Podium Programme (run by Sport Wellington) is to provide a platform from which performance athletes build knowledge and skills to better prepare them for high performance.
Congratulations Sophie!
